Aromatherapy Massage
Aromatherapy massage is a specific type of massage therapy. Highly concentrated plant oils called essential oils, are added to the massage oil or lotion. This is then used on clients during a treatment.
Inhaling essential oils through the nose is thought to promote beneficial changes in the mind and body. It’s believed to affect a region of the brain known to influence the nervous system, called the limbic system. Each essential oil used in aromatherapy massage is said to have different properties. For example, some calm while others energise. Essential oils are absorbed through the skin, hence why aromatherapy massage is so effective.
The Benefits
This particular type of massage is beneficial to those suffering with certain joint and muscle pain as well as physical or mental stress. It is similar to Swedish massage but with the essential oils added. Other conditions include:
- Headache

What To Expect
You’ll begin any treatment with a consultation first. This allows the therapist to decide which essential oils would be best to use for your condition. The therapist will explain what oils they plan to use for the treatment and the benefits they could offer you. The essential oils will be mixed into the massage oil or lotion. Alternatively, they may already have a pre-blended massage oil.
During an aromatherapy massage you’ll inhale the subtle aromas of the essential oils as they fill the air around you. The massage itself is often soft and gentle. The therapist should be able to recognise any tight areas and muscles, working gently to release them. After the massage, your therapist may suggest a blend that you can use at home in between massage treatments.
