Keeping Your Backback and Items Dry
When you’re on a great outdoor living escapade, rain can be very unfriendly. Pouring rain isn’t anyone’s idea of a great outdoor living experience, but it very well can be a part of it. In order to survive rainy days in the outdoors backpacking, you should take precautions for your backpack and items in the backpack. There are things that you can do to help prevent your things from getting soaked, including food and electronic gear. If you’ve ever been caught in the rain while out on a great outdoor living adventure, then you know how aggravating it can be to find all of your clothes, food and belongings soak and wet.
The first step you can take for protecting the things in your backpack is to buy a pack that is waterproof. Now, this isn’t going to be the all-around solution to your problem. A great outdoor living waterproof backpack can help to keep your things dry but it doesn’t mean that nothing will be touched by water. Waterproof backpacks are made with zippers and seams that help to keep water out. If you’re not bad with sewing, you can waterproof a backpack by using a seam sealer.
Another thing you can do to keep your belongings dry while on a great outdoor living adventure is to buy a pack cover. If you’re unable to get a seam sealer for your backpack, you can use the cover as an alternative. It will help to protect the seams of your backpack and it will keep your entire backpack dry. You can find pack covers sold at great outdoor living stores. These pack covers are made with waterproof materials and are large enough to wrap around your backpack (they’re also very affordable at great outdoor living stores). Some people wrap the pack over the things inside the backpack, but it’s best to just cover the entire backpack during rainy great outdoor living experiences.
Now, covering the things inside of your backpack isn’t a bad idea and doesn’t have to be completely ruled out. You can use waterproof zipper bags for your items. You should put larger items, such as sleeping bags, into their own separate bags. For the smaller items you’re taking on your great outdoor living escapade, you can place into zip lock bags. It also helps to better organize your smaller belongings.
Gaiters and rain ponchos are other items you can buy from a great outdoor living store. Gaiters can be worn underneath your pants and will help to keep your feet dry. Ponchos, unlike rain coats, have a more wide, open cut that allows more coverage for you and your backpack.
Of course, we have to mention the most obvious tool for rainy days…an umbrella. Make sure that the umbrella you bring along for your great outdoor living experience is lightweight, yet big enough to cover you and your backpack.
